Fideuram Slammed by €95 Million AI-Generated Scam

Share

Fideuram, a private banking subsidiary of Intesa Sanpaolo, was hit by an AI voice scam in February 2026. At least €95 million was transferred to accounts in mainland China, Hong Kong, and elsewhere after the former chairman Paolo Molesini received a WhatsApp message impersonating Carlo Messina, chief executive of Intesa Sanpaolo Group.

The message was followed by a phone call that used an AI-generated voice impersonating lawyer Paolo Nastasi. Fideuram's finance department made the payments at Molesini's instruction, resulting in approximately €95 million being transferred.

At least €36 million of the transferred funds were converted into cryptocurrency after multiple overseas transactions. Investigators are tracing the movement of those funds through international judicial cooperation.
