Firelight Raises $8M to Bring Reliable Coverage to DeFi
The DeFi protocol Firelight has raised an $8 million seed round led by Gumi Cryptos Capital, marking a significant milestone in its development. The protocol aims to protect on-chain capital against various risks, including protocol and smart contract failures.
According to the founders of Firelight, every major leap in financial market growth has been preceded by a risk-transfer innovation. They argue that DeFi is no exception, with a gap between its current size and its potential size due to the lack of a robust cover layer.
The team behind Firelight believes that the importance of cover scales inversely with the user's familiarity with the underlying risk. As DeFi yield migrates upward through layers of abstraction, making it more accessible to mainstream users, the need for reliable coverage becomes increasingly crucial.
Firelight's founders identify three structural failures in previous attempts at DeFi cover: reflexive collateral, the absence of a pricing engine, and discretionary claims. They argue that these issues have capped growth in the sector, preventing it from reaching its full potential.
