Fiserv Brings Stablecoin Settlement to Core Banking Systems with Roughrider Coin
Fiserv, a leading provider of financial services technology, has announced the launch of its digital-asset platform with the Bank of North Dakota's Roughrider Coin as its first live use case. The platform, which is now live with financial-institution clients, aims to bring stablecoin settlement closer to the core banking systems used by conventional financial institutions.
The Roughrider Coin is a dollar-backed stablecoin designed to improve money movement across North Dakota's interbank network. VersaBank serves as the issuer, Fireblocks provides secure digital-asset and tokenization infrastructure, and transactions are processed on the Solana blockchain.
This move is significant as it brings together several layers that banks normally have to assemble separately, including issuance, blockchain settlement, wallet infrastructure, and integration with core financial systems. Stablecoin adoption is increasingly heading in this direction, with other institutions like Toss Bank and Visa also exploring similar solutions.
Fiserv's advantage lies in its distribution into banks that already rely on its software, making it easier for financial institutions to adopt stablecoin support as a feature. The quiet battle is over settlement plumbing, with banks caring about speed, liquidity, reconciliation, counterparty risk, and integration with compliance controls.
