Fiserv Launches Stablecoin on Solana for North Dakota Banks
Fiserv, a payments giant, has launched its stablecoin settlement on the Solana blockchain. The stablecoin, called Roughrider Coin, is used for interbank payments among more than 90 North Dakota banks and credit unions. Bank of North Dakota is using Fiserv's infrastructure to deploy the coin statewide, and participating institutions can access it through Commercial Center, Fiserv's commercial online banking system.
The coin is designed for bank-to-bank money movement across North Dakota's interbank network, and its issuance, reserve, custody, and settlement are handled by VersaBank. Fireblocks provides the digital asset infrastructure and tokenization services. The announcement did not provide details on transaction volumes, dollar amounts, throughput, fees, or the number of transactions processed.
The launch gives Solana a production use case in regulated payments, but it does not establish the network as a major source of stablecoin liquidity. Fiserv's platform also targets corporates, marketplaces, and fintechs, with potential use cases including stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, and programmable commerce.
