Flutterwave's Stablecoin Stack Revolutionizes African Payments
Flutterwave has been building a multi-rail stablecoin stack for African payments over the past five years. The company's approach treats stablecoins as settlement rails beneath its consumer and business products, adding Tempo, Polygon, Turnkey, and Nuvion across various African corridors.
The principle behind this architecture is that 'the stablecoin is the rail, not the product,' according to Mercy Emmanuel, Flutterwave's Stablecoin Vertical Lead. This concept explains a partner map that now spans Circle, Ripple, Polygon, Tempo, Turnkey, and Nuvion.
Flutterwave has been gradually assembling its stablecoin settlement stack over the years. In 2021, it began exploring USDC for Africa-Europe remittances through an integration with Stellar. The company joined Circle Payments Network (CPN) as a design partner in 2025 and made Polygon its default blockchain for cross-border stablecoin transfers.
More recently, Flutterwave partnered with Nuvion for global banking rails and Turnkey for wallet infrastructure. Tempo, the payments-focused blockchain incubated by Stripe and Paradigm, joined as a second settlement rail alongside Polygon in June 2026.
