FNB Adds Crypto Trading to Banking App for South African Clients
First National Bank (FNB) has expanded its share trading platform to include cryptocurrency trading, allowing South African retail clients to invest in digital assets directly through the FNB app. This move follows a partnership with VALR, a well-known cryptocurrency exchange, and aims to cater to the growing demand for alternative investment options while ensuring bank-grade security.
The platform supports trading in five major cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), Solana (SOL), and Tether (USDT). The minimum investment is set at just R10, making it accessible for retail investors. Trading is available 24/7, and purchases can be funded directly from existing FNB fiat accounts.
To comply with South Africa's strict exchange control laws and enhance security, FNB operates a closed-loop system. Clients cannot transfer cryptocurrency into their FNB portfolio from external wallets, nor can they withdraw assets to external platforms. This approach ensures compliance with anti-money laundering regulations and protects users from security risks associated with self-custody.
FNB's entry into the cryptocurrency space reflects the broader legitimization of digital assets. Bheki Mkhize, CEO of FNB Wealth and Asset Management, cited increasing client interest and the growing institutional acceptance of cryptocurrencies as key factors behind the decision. The shift is driven by regulatory licensing, institutional validation from major fund managers like BlackRock, and clearer legal frameworks.
