Founders Fund Leads $5 Million ANVL Token Purchase in Anvil Protocol
Founders Fund, the venture capital firm backed by Peter Thiel, has led a $5 million purchase of governance tokens in Anvil, a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol focused on digital-asset collateral. The investment round also included participation from Pantera Capital, Theta Blockchain Ventures, Bullish, and Protoscale Capital. Anvil revealed that the tokens were sourced from its existing treasury rather than being newly issued.
The protocol's governance token, ANVL, has a circulating supply of 80 billion out of a total supply of 100 billion. Anvil, built on Ethereum, enables digital assets to be used as collateral for financial commitments, such as payments and credit. Anvil Research Labs recently launched a software development kit (SDK) designed to help companies integrate Anvil's technology without needing to write blockchain code.
Joey Krug, a partner at Founders Fund, emphasized the importance of businesses securing financial commitments with verifiable digital asset collateral. Anvil Research Labs has already partnered with several companies, including Consensus, Bitcoin.com, and payments company Flexa, to integrate its tooling. Bullish, the parent company of CoinDesk, is also exploring potential use cases for Anvil within its operations.
Anvil is entering a segment of DeFi where using crypto as collateral is already prevalent. However, it aims to differentiate itself by offering a different use for crypto collateral compared to traditional DeFi lenders. The protocol, developed by the Acronym Foundation, has about $14 million in total value locked on its network, which is relatively small compared to established DeFi lending platforms.
