France Becomes Hotspot for Physical Attacks on Bitcoin Holders Amid Price Rally
Recent data from an interactive map created by Jameson Lopp, co-founder and chief security officer of Casa, reveals that France has emerged as a hotspot for physical attacks on Bitcoin holders. Since 2014, there have been 68 reported crypto-related attacks in France, with the U.S. coming in second at 59 and the U.K. third at 24. However, when measured by attacks per capita, Hong Kong leads the way with 1.72 attacks per million people.
According to Gart's database of physical Bitcoin attacks, almost 9% more attacks occurred in 2026 compared to Lopp's data. France saw a significant increase in attacks in the first nine months of this year, nearly tripling from 14 to 41. In contrast, the rest of the world experienced a decline of over half.
The number of physical Bitcoin attacks has been linked to the price of BTC, with a correlation showing that when the price rises, so do the attacks. As the current rally in Bitcoin continues, there is a concern among crypto owners that they may become targets for thieves.
