France has become the hotspot for crypto-related kidnappings and physical attacks, accounting for approximately 70% of global cases in 2026. According to Bitcoin journalist Joe Nakamoto, there have been 41 such incidents in France so far this year, with one attack occurring every two and a half days.

The high concentration of attacks is attributed to the Know Your Customer (KYC) data collection practices, which require exchanges and financial service providers to gather and store personal information about their users. This data is stored in centralized servers, making it vulnerable to breaches and leaks.

Jameson Lopp, CEO of crypto wallet company Casa, warned that France's situation illustrates a broader risk created by financial regulation. 'France is the canary in the coal mine, demonstrating how financial regulations create a surveillance apparatus that causes direct harm to Bitcoin holders,' he said.
