Fraternal Order of Police Backs Revised CLARITY Act After Lawmakers Address Concerns
The National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has endorsed the revised Digital Asset Market Clarity Act after lawmakers made changes to address concerns about cryptocurrency-related prosecutions.
The FOP, which represents over 382,000 active and retired officers, had initially opposed the bill due to language that could restrict prosecutors pursuing financial crimes involving cryptocurrency. However, revisions clarified that protections for certain noncontrolling software developers and decentralized technologies would not curtail investigations or prosecutions.
Law enforcement organizations have been divided on the bill, with some endorsing it while others oppose or remain neutral. The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) was the first major police organization to endorse the legislation, stating that it would expand investigative capabilities while preserving established criminal authorities.
