French Crypto Holders Flooded with Fake Support Calls After Tax Data Breach

A wave of phone scams is targeting French cryptocurrency holders, using stolen tax records to impersonate support staff from major platforms like Binance and Meria.

The scams are linked to a data breach at France's tax authority, the DGFiP, which exposed the personal details of up to millions of taxpayers in mid-August.

Attackers are cross-referencing leaked information to identify crypto owners and determine which exchanges they use, according to Owen Simonin, founder of Meria.

Suspecting a call is an attack in progress is the key guidance from both Simonin and state agencies: legitimate platforms do not initiate requests for transactions or personal information unless a customer has already flagged a problem.
