Frontier AI Model Costs Plummet Amid Intense Competition

In recent months, OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI have significantly reduced the costs of their AI models. The new pricing landscape is a result of intense competition in the market, particularly from Chinese AI models that undercut comparable US offerings by as much as nine times on a per-token basis.

OpenAI's GPT-6 lineup includes two tiers: Sol and Luna. Sol is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, representing a 50% reduction from its predecessor. Luna, the leaner model, costs $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens.

Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 also entered the market at $4 input and $20 output per million tokens, a roughly 40% decrease from its predecessor. xAI's Grok 4.7 launched around September 21-22, 2026, at $2 input and $6 output per million tokens.

The usage-based pricing model has amplified the dynamic of slowing down frontier AI development to allow safety research and regulatory frameworks to catch up. Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Elon Musk have each made public statements calling for a deliberate slowdown in frontier AI development due to emerging autonomous AI agents and capability gaps.
