Frontier Tech Goes Mainstream in Finance: Tokenized Equities, Quantum Computing, and AI in Production
The financial services industry is no longer just flirting with frontier technology, it's operating it. In the first week of October 2026, several significant developments have brought financial technology into the mainstream. The US Securities and Exchange Commission has introduced a five-year Innovation Exemption, allowing tokenized securities venues to facilitate on-chain trading of tokenized national market system stocks. This means trading platforms can offer tokenized versions of real US equities around the clock, with settlement measured in seconds rather than one business day.
On September 30, the SEC proposed to modernize registration and recordkeeping for transfer agents, explicitly allowing distributed ledger technology to track securities ownership. Barely six days after the exemption was introduced, the New York Stock Exchange signed an agreement with Blockchain.com to give users access to tokenized US exchange-listed stocks and ETFs, subject to regulatory approvals. The two also plan to exchange market data, with Intercontinental Exchange distributing Blockchain.com's crypto data and Blockchain.com adding ICE and NYSE stock data to its app.
Meanwhile, ARK Invest and Securitize have tokenized the ARK Venture Fund on Ethereum, offering eligible investors exposure to a portfolio that includes OpenAI and Anthropic. IBM has committed over $10 billion to quantum computing over the next five years, targeting delivery of the world's first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029. Bank of America has over 300 approved AI use cases, including 114 generative AI use cases, with 34 fully implemented across operations.
The market context is one of rapid growth, with the generative AI in banking market estimated to reach $1.77 billion in 2026, a 23.7% CAGR. Nearly 80% of global banking executives describe fully operationalized gen AI as a significant or transformational opportunity, yet only 18% report Gen AI is fully integrated into day-to-day operations.
