G20 Pledges Clearer Digital Asset Rules Amid Calls for Cross-Border Coordination
G20 finance ministers and central bank governors have agreed to develop clearer regulatory frameworks for digital assets while maintaining financial stability and cross-border risks in focus. The group acknowledged that digital assets can support economic growth and private-sector development, but also recognized the need for defined pathways for sound digital financial innovation.
The G20 Chair's Statement highlighted the importance of advancing responsible and effective regulatory and supervisory frameworks to preserve financial stability and support economic growth. Officials noted that several major economies, including the U.S., EU, and Japan, have already introduced regulatory frameworks covering digital assets or stablecoins.
The statement also emphasized the need for coordination on cross-border implications of global stablecoin arrangements, along with work examining stablecoin data sources and their availability. The G20 reaffirmed its commitment to the roadmap for enhancing cross-border payments and called for longer operating hours for large-value payment systems.
