G7 Warns Quantum Threat Imperils Global Digital Security
The G7 has warned that quantum computers pose a significant threat to digital security and economic stability. The group's cybersecurity working group emphasized that organizations should begin migrating to post-quantum cryptography now, as attackers can collect encrypted data today and decrypt it if sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge.
Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana developers are already testing defenses against the threat. The G7 report notes that current quantum computers cannot break Bitcoin's cryptography, but developers are considering post-quantum proposals to prepare the network for new signature schemes.
Ethereum researchers are planning replacements for several cryptographic components used by accounts, validators, and applications, while Solana may have a simpler migration path. The G7 Cybersecurity Working Group urged governments to support research, public-private partnerships, and national PQC strategies while adding quantum security to procurement requirements.
