US and UK Unite Against Overseas Crypto Scam Compounds
US and UK law enforcement have signed a historic memorandum of understanding to tackle overseas crypto scam compounds. These scams drain approximately $10 billion from Americans every year, with reported losses rising by 89% in 2025 to $8.65 billion. The agreement between the US Attorney's Office for D.C., the Crown Prosecution Service, and the National Crime Agency will see the agencies run parallel investigations into shared targets and share intelligence on organized crime syndicates.
The MOU is a response to the increasing threat of cyber-enabled investment fraud, which accounted for nearly 85% of all losses logged by the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center last year. The authorities have already seen success in their efforts, with over $700 million in crypto restrained in April and an additional $25 million seized in July.
Private firms such as Coinbase are also joining forces to combat these scams, freezing over $3 million linked to Asian fraud rings during a DOJ Disruption Week in June. The disruption operation planned for London in early October is expected to further disrupt the activities of these scam compounds.
