Galaxy Digital Pledges $5 Million for Bitcoin Quantum Defense
Asset manager Galaxy Digital has pledged to spend up to $5 million to protect Bitcoin against a potential quantum computer threat. A powerful enough quantum computer could theoretically crack Bitcoin's encryption, allowing someone to drain coins from wallets with exposed public keys.
The main concern is the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA), used for digital signatures. This algorithm could be vulnerable to attacks from a sufficiently powerful quantum computer.
About one-third of all Bitcoin has its public key exposed on the chain, creating an opening for a potential attack. The development community is aware of the threat and has proposed several solutions, including adding wallet address types that protect future coins stored at those addresses.
