GBP Edges Lower Against USD Amid Ongoing Geopolitical Tensions
The British Pound (GBP) edged lower against the US Dollar (USD) during the Asian session on Thursday, retreating from its highest level since May 11. Spot prices slipped below the 1.3600 mark in the last hour, but the fundamental backdrop still favors a bullish bias.
The USD stabilized after Wednesday's slump to a three-month low, with US Treasury Department intervention providing relief to bond markets. The department will at least double its purchases of longer-dated government debt starting in September, helping limit further USD losses amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions over the Strait of Hormuz.
Hawkish FOMC Minutes also contributed to limiting USD losses, despite US President Donald Trump's announcement that Washington would impose stricter economic restrictions on Iran. The UK consumer inflation figures from Wednesday reaffirmed bets for at least one quarter-point interest rate hike by the Bank of England before the end of the year.
Investors now await key releases, including the Philly Fed Manufacturing Index and Weekly Initial Jobless Claims data, which may influence the USD's performance. Influential FOMC members' speeches will also drive the USD and impact the GBP/USD pair. Geopolitical headlines may further inject volatility into financial markets.
