Gemini Exchange Business Shrinks as Regulatory Licenses Remain Valuable
Gemini's exchange business is shrinking significantly, but its regulatory licenses may be the real prize. The company, which operates a cryptocurrency exchange and custodial services, reported a decline in revenue from its exchange business in recent quarters.
According to CoinDesk, Gemini's exchange revenue declined by approximately 25% year-over-year in the second quarter of this year, down from around $1.3 billion to about $975 million. This trend is consistent with reports that the company has been struggling to compete with larger exchanges like Coinbase and Binance.
Despite these challenges, Gemini's regulatory licenses are still highly valuable. The company has obtained licenses in several key jurisdictions, including New York State and Japan, which give it a competitive edge in terms of compliance and reputation. This makes its licenses an attractive asset for potential buyers or investors.
