Gemini Suffers Heavy Net Loss Despite Revenue Growth
Cryptocurrency exchange Gemini reported its Q2 financials, showing a significant net loss despite revenue growth. The company's revenue increased by 37% year-over-year to $45.5 million in the second quarter. However, this increase was not enough to offset a sharp decline in trading volume and resulting transaction losses.
Gemini reported an exchange revenue drop of 38% to $12.5 million as trading volume plummeted to $3.8 billion from $11.3 billion. Meanwhile, services revenue jumped by 149%, driven primarily by a 231% increase in credit card revenue to $16.2 million and a 50% rise in staking revenue to $4 million.
The company attributed its elevated transaction losses of $20.1 million to a provision for credit losses tied to an identity fraud event involving the credit card portfolio, which affected accounts but did not reflect a broader deterioration in the portfolio.
