GENIUS Act Final Rules Set for November Publication
The GENIUS Act, passed in July last year, is shaping up to be a comprehensive regulatory framework for payment stablecoins. The act's final rules are set to be published by November, with full enforcement scheduled for January 18, 2027.
Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies pegged to stable fiat currencies like the US dollar or euro, offering faster and cheaper money transfers than traditional bank methods. They can also be used for lending platforms and automated market makers.
The GENIUS Act requires stablecoin issuers to back their coins with US dollars, short-term Treasuries, or central bank deposits at a 1:1 reserve ratio. Large issuers with more than $10 billion in circulation are overseen by federal regulators, while smaller issuers can opt for state-level regulation.
The act also provides clearer consumer protections, including the right to redeem stablecoins for US dollars on demand and preference over general creditors in case of insolvency.
