GENIUS Act Sparks Role Specialization Between Banks and Fintech Companies

Share

The GENIUS Act, a federal law in the United States that regulates payment stablecoins, has sparked discussions about its impact on traditional financial institutions and fintech companies.

WeFi CEO Maksym Sakharov believes the act will not lead to a simple 'banks-versus-fintechs' outcome. Instead, it will create an opportunity for role specialization, where banks support trust and regulated access, while fintechs and crypto-native infrastructure providers make stablecoins usable and accessible.

Sakharov argues that the GENIUS Act can create a competitive advantage for regulated dollar-backed issuers in institutional payments, treasury, and regulated financial channels. However, existing global players like Tether may remain strong where network effects, liquidity, and accessibility are key drivers.
