Gensler: Bitcoin Alone Resembles Commodity Amid Regulatory Distinctions
Former SEC chair Gary Gensler believes that Bitcoin is the only cryptocurrency that shares characteristics of a commodity. In an interview from 2025, he stated that its decentralized nature and global recognition make it stand out among other digital assets.
Gensler also argued that most altcoins lack underlying economic fundamentals, offering no dividends or cash flows, and are primarily speculative investments. He distinguished stablecoins as a separate category but maintained that thousands of altcoins are essentially bets on price increases.
This view is in line with regulatory distinctions that treat Bitcoin differently from other digital assets, impacting how they are regulated and perceived by investors.
