Gensler Takes Aim at Crypto Exchanges Over Lack of Transparency
SEC Chair Gary Gensler has expressed concerns about the operations of cryptocurrency exchanges for the second time this year. In an interview with CNBC, he stated that these platforms engage in practices that would be unacceptable on regulated exchanges like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). One major issue is the lack of transparency and disclosure provided to investors by crypto exchanges.
Gensler emphasized that traditional exchanges are held to strict standards, ensuring investor protection. He suggested that some crypto platforms might be trading against their customers, which would be a conflict of interest. This behavior would be unacceptable on regulated exchanges, he noted.
The SEC Chair believes that crypto exchanges should adhere to the same standards as traditional financial markets and emphasizes the need for regulatory oversight. Without proper regulation, investors remain at risk. His comments come amid increasing calls for tighter crypto regulation and ongoing investigations by the SEC.
