Georgia Authorities Recover Stolen Crypto from Elderly Victims
Georgia authorities have recovered stolen cryptocurrency from elderly victims of a scheme involving a pop-up warning and impersonation of federal officials.
A joint investigation by the Oconee County Sheriff's Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and Attorney General's White Collar and Cyber Crime Unit tracked down the digital assets after they were transferred through multiple wallets to an account on a cryptocurrency exchange.
The victims, who are elderly residents in east Georgia, fell victim to the scheme when a pop-up alert appeared on their computer claiming that their bank account had been breached.
A perpetrator impersonating an official from the Federal Trade Commission directed them to withdraw money from their bank and deposit it into a cryptocurrency kiosk, staying on the phone with them as they did so.
The authorities highlighted the importance of collaboration in tracking digital transactions across multiple accounts, saying that 'cyber-enabled fraud targeting the elderly and other vulnerable individuals will not be tolerated.'
