Georgia Man Loses $164,000 to Fake Crypto Investment via Online Romance

A romance blossomed online between a man from Unadilla in Dooly County and a woman he met on Facebook in June 2025. The relationship turned to cryptocurrency, with the woman convincing the man to invest his savings into what seemed like a legitimate trading opportunity.

However, it was all a scam. Authorities say the woman cultivated a romantic relationship before persuading the man to send money into a fake cryptocurrency scheme, known as 'relationship investment' or 'pig butchering' scam.

The Dooly County man lost more than $164,000 in this way. But investigators were able to trace part of the cryptocurrency and seized approximately 0.28 Bitcoin, valued at around $18,200 at the time of the seizure.
