Germany Consolidates Lead in EU MiCA Authorizations with Six New Banks
The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) register has added six new crypto asset service providers, all of which are German cooperative banks. This brings Germany's total count to 79, solidifying its lead as the most active EU market for MiCA authorizations.
According to the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the updated register now lists 331 authorized CASPs across the European Union. Germany's share has increased significantly with the addition of six new cooperative banks: Raiffeisenbank Aidlingen, Ihre Volksbank, VR-Bank Mittelfranken Mitte, Volksbank Euskirchen, VR Bank Ried-Überwald, and Volksbank Backnang.
This expansion is a testament to Germany's well-established financial sector and its existing regulatory pathways. The country's Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) had previously stated that the high number of MiCA authorizations was partly due to the large financial industry and the simplified authorization procedures for eligible credit institutions during the transition to MiCA.
The pace of MiCA authorizations matters as it allows compliant crypto-asset services across the EU. A larger number of authorized providers can lead to broader availability of regulated services for users in that country and potentially more competition among licensed entities.
