Ghana Ranks Fifth in Sub-Saharan Africa for Crypto Adoption with $21 Billion Transactions
Ghana has made significant strides in crypto adoption, ranking fifth among sub-Saharan Africa countries.
A recent report by the International Monetary Fund found that between 8% and 17% of Ghana's population have bought or sold cryptocurrency, with estimated annual transactions reaching $21 billion.
The use of stablecoins is growing rapidly, but their main use cases remain in crypto trading and as a hedge against inflation. However, there is increasing use in cross-border settlement in the informal and semi-formal economy.
Ghana passed legislation on crypto markets and activities in December 2025, giving the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) power over these markets.
