Ghana Tests Crypto Regulation with Sandbox Experiment

Ghana is taking a cautious approach to regulating its cryptocurrency market by creating a sandbox for 11 digital asset companies. This controlled experiment will allow regulators to test and refine their oversight rules before fully opening the sector.

The selected companies, including Africoin, Blu Penguin, Goldbod, HanyPay, Hyro Exchange GH Ltd, HSB Global, Koinkoin, Whitebits, Vaulta, Xchain, and Bsystem Ltd, will operate under supervision for a 12-month pilot period. This will give regulators valuable insights into how virtual asset services function in practice.

The sandbox is part of Ghana's Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, passed in 2025, which aimed to provide a structured regulatory framework for cryptocurrency businesses.
