Glamsterdam Upgrade Clears Capacity Test Ahead of October Deployment
Ethereum's upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade has cleared another key test, demonstrating its ability to handle a significant increase in capacity. The update, which is set to be deployed on October 6 on the Sepolia public test network, aims to enable parallel processing and support greater network capacity.
Nethermind's execution software completed all 2,302 performance tests, which measured the client's ability to process block-level access lists. This feature allows Ethereum computers to fetch data and check unrelated transactions simultaneously, reducing the need for sequential processing and enabling more activity in each block.
The Glamsterdam upgrade also raised the block gas limit from 60 million to 200 million, creating room for more transactions, token swaps, and other activity without causing fee spikes. While this is a test setting rather than a commitment for Ethereum's main network, it demonstrates the potential for increased capacity and reduced fees.
Specialized builders package transactions, while validators check the resulting blocks and secure the chain. The Glamsterdam upgrade would place that handoff and accompanying payments inside Ethereum's own rules, reducing dependence on outside relay services.
