Glamsterdam Upgrade Test Faces Security Risk as Fake Builder Identities Loom
Ethereum developers are gearing up for the Sepolia test of the Ethereum Glamsterdam upgrade on October 6, but they're warning about a potential security risk.
The test aims to check whether the network can handle planned changes before a mainnet launch. However, developers have expressed concerns that fake builder identities could disrupt the rehearsal. An attacker could use free test ether to place high bids and win block auctions, then refuse to reveal transaction data, leaving blocks without transaction information.
Glamsterdam moves the link between validators and block builders into Ethereum's protocol, which creates a cheap attack path on Sepolia due to the low value of test ether. A bad actor could create many builder accounts, submit unrealistic bids, win auctions, and withhold payloads, slowing down testing.
