Gold Shines as Bitcoin's Volatility Takes Center Stage Amid Market Turmoil
The year 2026 has seen a significant divergence in performance among gold, Bitcoin, and stocks, according to recent data. While Indian equities have struggled to keep pace, gold has emerged as a strong performer.
Bitcoin has been the standout performer over the past month, rising 27% over one week and 27% over one month. However, its year-to-date (YTD) return remains negative at -8%. This sharp divergence between short-term and YTD performance highlights the volatility that continues to define Bitcoin as an investment asset.
V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, cautioned that the recent move in Bitcoin has been highly speculative. He noted that gold's return, on the other hand, is more stable and suggested that investors should continue to consider gold as part of their portfolios.
The Nifty 50 has had a subdued recent run, with the benchmark down 0.40% over the past week and essentially flat over that period. For the year so far, however, the index is down 7.49%, highlighting the contrast between its recent monthly recovery and its broader YTD performance.
