Gold's Long Bull Run Puts Bitcoin's Defensive Credentials to the Test
Morgan Stanley's chief US equity strategist and CIO Mike Wilson claims that gold has been in a bull market for 25 years, functioning as a portfolio shield. This framing puts the 'digital gold' narrative back under scrutiny for Bitcoin allocators.
The point is not just about gold's price movement but its durability during various crises. Gold's 25-year bull run covers multiple credit cycles, a global financial crisis, a pandemic, and several inflation scares. Allocators are buying into gold's defensive character, which has proven consistent over the years.
In contrast, Bitcoin has struggled to decouple from risk assets when volatility spikes. Despite being liquid, global, and censorship-resistant, Bitcoin often behaves like a high-beta risk asset during sharp equity selloffs. This distinction is crucial for institutional portfolios, where a defensive allocation needs to be 'boring' in times of stress.
Wilson's framing suggests that while Bitcoin can coexist with gold in a portfolio, it may not replace gold as the go-to defensive asset. Institutional investors might choose to hold both assets and assign them separate roles: gold for defense and Bitcoin for exposure to digital scarcity and on-chain growth.
