Google's Gemini AI Endorses Fake TRON Energy Rental Site, Stealing $69,651
Google's Gemini AI-powered search assistant inadvertently endorsed a fraudulent TRON energy rental site, Tronify.rent, which took $69,651 from approximately 80 people in September. The incident highlights the risks of AI-driven crypto advice and the need for stricter verification of crypto service domains. According to a crypto investigator, JP, the scammer was able to get Google's Gemini to recommend the fake website, citing Trust Wallet's integration with Tronify.
The AI answer, which was attributed to Gemini, stated that the official web domain for Tronify was tronify.rent and even mentioned that Trust Wallet natively integrated Tronify. However, this integration was with a different domain, tronify.io, not tronify.rent. The scammer used this misinformation to convince users to connect their wallets to the fake site, resulting in the loss of $69,651 in one month.
The incident raises concerns about the security standards in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector and the need for stricter verification of crypto service domains. It also highlights the risks of relying on AI-driven crypto advice without proper verification. Tronify.rent's homepage claims to be a legitimate service, but further investigation reveals that it is a fake site designed to steal funds from unsuspecting users.
