GOP Panic Sets In as Blue Wave Looms
With less than six weeks to go until Election Day, Republicans are growing increasingly anxious about their prospects of retaining control of Congress. The sentiment among Republicans is shifting from nervous to fatalistic, with many convinced they're headed toward an electoral disaster.
Outside groups backing the GOP are spending millions on Senate races in once-safe territories like Nebraska and Kansas, while South Carolina, Mississippi, South Dakota, and Arkansas are drawing renewed attention amid fears of a massive blue wave. Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina told his fellow Senators at a closed-door briefing that 2026 won't look anything like 2024.
The NRSC's top priorities are now almost entirely defense, as they scramble to avoid losing GOP-held seats in Texas, Iowa, Maine, and Alaska. They're also still investing to flip Democratic seats in Michigan and New Hampshire, where some polls show Democrats with small leads over Republicans.
