GPT-6 Astra Cracks 80-Year-Old Enigma Code in 10 Hours
A recent breakthrough in cryptography has left experts talking about the potential implications for Bitcoin and other digital assets. OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, a powerful language model, was used to crack a previously unsolved German Army Enigma message from July 1941. The message, which had been encrypted with a three-rotor machine, was decrypted in just 10 hours using the model.
The Enigma codebreaker, Carter Leffen, provided a crucial piece of information - a repeated place name, Rosenow - that significantly narrowed down the search space for the model. The model then searched through historical archives, compared uncertain letters, and built an Enigma simulator to test competing keys in parallel.
While this achievement is impressive, it's worth noting that the codebreaking itself was not entirely autonomous. Leffen set the goal, supplied the crib, and pushed the investigation forward, while the model carried out the execution.
The breakthrough has raised questions about the potential vulnerability of modern encryption systems to similar attacks. However, experts point out that Enigma is a 1930s rotor machine, and the math protecting Bitcoin wallets sits in a far harder class, making it unlikely that such an attack would be successful against modern cryptography.
