Grayscale Lists Zcash ETF Amid Patched Vulnerability and Network Upgrade
Grayscale's Zcash Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) began trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH, allowing investors to track the price of ZEC through brokerage accounts without directly buying or storing the token. The fund was previously a private placement established in October 2017 and was converted into an ETF after developers disclosed and patched a critical vulnerability in Zcash's shielded transaction system.
The vulnerability, which could have allowed attackers to create counterfeit ZEC, was discovered in May by security researcher Taylor Hornby using Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8. Developers deployed an emergency patch on June 1, but the network's privacy features made it impossible to determine if the flaw had been exploited.
Grayscale Head of Index Steve Vanourny said the fund's maturity, privacy features, and investor demand for assets beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum made this the right time to list the nine-year-old fund. He also emphasized that Grayscale will judge Zcash's progress by its adoption, utility, and network security rather than its price.
Vanourny stated that the Ironwood upgrade, which replaced Orchard with a new shielded pool, added accounting rules that prevent more ZEC from leaving the retired pool than entered it, trapping any counterfeit coins that may exist. Grayscale will monitor exchange support and regulatory treatment of Zcash and privacy assets more broadly.
