Grayscale Sees Turning Point as Bitcoin Price Hits $79,500
Grayscale, a crypto asset manager, suggests that Bitcoin may have reached a turning point this week. This assessment comes after a rapid recovery in the cryptocurrency's price, which rose to $79,500 on August 21, its highest value since May. The rebound broke a prolonged trading range and forced traders holding bearish derivatives positions to close their bets.
The rally was also accompanied by renewed spot demand and ETF inflows, with approximately $1.92 billion in net inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) over five sessions ending August 21. This suggests that the market's gains may be driven by more than just forced buying by short sellers.
Grayscale's chart comparing Bitcoin's current decline with four previous market cycles indicates that the current drawdown is shallower than the earlier cycle declines, which had wiped out approximately 80% of the previous peaks. Historically, Bitcoin has bottomed around 80% below its cycle peak price, but in the latest bear market, it fell only around 50% from its peak.
Other market signals also point towards accumulation, with Vaneck's analysis finding that eight of 12 capitulation signals were active as of August 12. However, comparable signal clusters have historically produced below-baseline average returns over 90 and 180 days.
