Grayscale Shifts Focus to AI Infrastructure with Rebranded ETF
Grayscale Investments has made a significant shift in its investment strategy with the renaming of the Grayscale Bitcoin Miners ETF (MNRS) to the Grayscale AI Compute ETF (GCPU). The new fund is focused on companies involved in computing infrastructure, such as data centers, electricity suppliers, and companies that expand computing power for artificial intelligence (AI) models.
The GCPU fund will track the Indxx High Performance Computing Index, which includes companies that are key players in the AI sector. The fund's portfolio can consist of up to 50% companies related to AI, cloud services, graphics processing units (GPUs), and AI hosting solutions, while the remaining portion will include mining companies that have reconfigured their capacities for AI tasks or are in the process of transformation.
Grayscale pointed out that the growth of AI workloads has led to a shortage of infrastructure, with available space in North American data centers at a historic low. Building new facilities can take up to five years, and capital expenditures for creating AI infrastructure could exceed $1 trillion per year, according to Goldman Sachs.
Grayscale's head of research, Zach Pandl, noted that the development of AI is increasing interest in protecting personal and financial data, which may lead investors to focus on privacy coins such as Zcash.
