Grayscale's AI Sector Surges 54% in September, Outpaces Broader Crypto Market
The Grayscale AI crypto sector has experienced a remarkable surge in September, returning an impressive 54% for the month. This significant gain far surpassed the broader crypto market's performance under Grayscale's six-sector framework, which posted a 24% gain.
According to Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, the sector's momentum can be attributed to early investor recognition of blockchains as foundational infrastructure for the emerging agent economy. The use cases driving this growth include payments, identity, private computation, and verifiable records.
The tokens that drove the AI sector's performance were not evenly weighted, with NEAR leading the pack at 183% gain for the month. VVV followed closely behind with a 70% increase, while WLD added 47%. TAO rounded out the notable performers at 37%.
A single-day spike on September 22 contributed to the narrative, with AI tokens posting a roughly 9.7% gain in one session. Despite this impressive performance, the AI sector still holds the smallest market capitalization of any sector in Grayscale's framework, sitting at approximately $15 billion after the rally.
Grayscale has been positioning itself around the AI-blockchain convergence thesis through its Decentralized AI Fund, which was launched in 2024 and rebalanced in early August 2026. The firm also rebranded its Bitcoin Miners ETF as the Grayscale AI Compute ETF on September 22, shifting its focus from Bitcoin mining equities to high-performance computing equities and futures more broadly.
