Grayscale's Fee Compression Struggle: Can the New Mini Trust Save the Day?
The fee compression war in the Bitcoin ETF market is heating up as BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) continues to attract massive inflows, while Grayscale's Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) sheds assets. IBIT accumulated $1.08 billion in net inflows over a 20-day period, while GBTC saw outflows of $254.7 million during the same timeframe.
The significant difference in fees between the two funds is driving this asset migration. IBIT has an expense ratio of just 0.25%, six times lower than GBTC's 1.50% annual fee. This massive gap is making it increasingly difficult for Grayscale to retain its assets as institutional investors opt for lower-cost products.
To combat these outflows, Grayscale launched the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) with a 0.15% fee, seeded with 10% of GBTC's assets. This move allows long-term holders to reduce their ongoing costs without triggering capital gains taxes on large unrealized gains.
