US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with China's Vice Premier He Lifeng on July 30 to discuss trade commitments ahead of upcoming bilateral meetings between the two largest economies.

The conversation appears to be groundwork for a more formal round of negotiations, following the May 2026 Trump-Xi summit that produced some concrete outcomes after years of fits and starts.

As part of the May deal, China committed to purchasing at least $17 billion in US agricultural goods annually. This new institutional framework is designed to address tariffs and non-tariff barriers between the two countries through the creation of the US-China Board of Trade.
