Grok Dominates Coinbase AI Trading with 60% Share, but What Coins Are Being Bought?
Grok, the AI chatbot created by Elon Musk's xAI, has taken the lead in automated trading on Coinbase. According to a recent announcement by Coinbase's CEO Brian Armstrong, Grok accounted for about 60% of AI agent trading activity on the platform from September 14 to September 21.
This dominance raises questions about what coins these AI agents are actually buying. However, Coinbase has not disclosed this information, leaving speculation to rely on guesswork rather than solid exchange data.
The AI agents on Coinbase, referred to as 'agentic traders,' are programs that receive a wallet and specific instructions to place trades automatically without human approval. Coinbase's 'Coinbase for Agents' service allows these AI tools to trade cryptocurrencies and derivatives within predefined spending limits.
Despite Grok's strong presence in AI trading, the specific cryptocurrencies it buys remain a mystery. However, the payment aspect of agent activity offers more clarity, with USDC dominating AI agent payments via Coinbase's x402 standard, which has already processed over 160 million transactions.
The Base network handles more than 90% of this transaction volume, confirming transfers in about two seconds. This speed is crucial, as slower settlement times can create opportunities for 'agent swarms', groups of coordinated bots that could potentially capitalize on delays.
