Grok Leads AI Trading on Coinbase But Coin Purchases Stay Secret
Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, has emerged as the dominant force in automated trading on Coinbase. On September 25, 2026, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced that Grok is currently the leading client for agentic traders on the platform. Data from September 14 to September 21, 2026, showed that Grok accounted for about 60% of AI agent trading activity, significantly outpacing competitors like custom command-line tools, Claude, Perplexity, and ChatGPT.
Agentic traders are automated programs that execute trades without human intervention, operating within predefined spending limits. Coinbase introduced this capability in June 2026 with the launch of “Coinbase for Agents,” allowing AI tools to trade cryptocurrencies and derivatives. The service was expanded in September 2026 to include U.S. stocks and ETFs. Despite Grok’s prominence, Coinbase has not disclosed which cryptocurrencies these AI agents are buying, leaving investors in the dark about potential beneficiaries beyond USDC.
The payment aspect of agent activity is clearer. Coinbase’s x402 standard enables AI agents to pay for online services directly, with over 160 million transactions processed primarily in USDC. The Base network handles more than 90% of this transaction volume, offering near-instant settlement times. The Ethereum Foundation is also introducing similar payment tools using USDC, emphasizing the stablecoin’s role in AI-driven transactions.
While Grok’s dominance in AI trading is undeniable, the lack of transparency regarding the specific cryptocurrencies being traded remains a significant gap. Until Coinbase provides a breakdown of the coins involved, any speculation about AI agent preferences is purely conjecture.
