Grok Leads AI Trading on Coinbase with 60% Share
Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk's xAI, has taken the lead in automated trading on Coinbase, capturing about 60% of the platform's AI agent trading activity. This dominance was highlighted by Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong on September 25, 2026, who noted that Grok is currently the top client for agentic traders on the exchange. The data, spanning from September 14 to September 21, 2026, shows Grok significantly outpacing competitors like Claude (13%), custom tools (22%), and ChatGPT (2%).
Despite Grok's strong presence, Coinbase has not disclosed which cryptocurrencies these AI agents are buying. The platform only revealed that payments for online services are predominantly made using USDC, the stablecoin issued by Circle. Over 160 million transactions have been processed via Coinbase's x402 standard, with the Base network handling more than 90% of this volume. The lack of transparency on specific coin purchases leaves investors guessing about potential beneficiaries beyond USDC.
Cryptocurrency trading is particularly well-suited for automated agents due to the 24/7 nature of blockchain networks and the ability to create self-custody wallets without traditional identity checks. While AI agents are also capable of trading U.S. stocks and ETFs, the focus remains on cryptocurrencies. The Ethereum Foundation's introduction of zkAPI further supports USDC payments for AI models, emphasizing the speed and efficiency of these transactions.
The uncertainty surrounding which coins AI agents favor means any claims about preferred tokens are speculative. Until Coinbase provides a breakdown of the trading activity by cryptocurrency, the impact of AI agent trading on specific coins remains unclear.
