Grok Surges Past ChatGPT in Coinbase Agent Trading Volume
Coinbase's AI-powered trading agents have been making waves in the cryptocurrency market. The exchange recently shared a chart showing the notional trading volume by large language model (LLM) client, and Grok emerged as the leading client with 59.54% of the volume. This is surprising given that ChatGPT was one of the launch partners for Coinbase's agent trading feature.
According to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, 'Grok is the leading client for agentic traders on Coinbase currently.' The chart showed that Grok was followed by custom command-line interface (CLI) setups, Claude, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Claude Code. The exchange didn't provide a reason for the gap between Grok and ChatGPT's performance, but it could be due to Grok living inside X, where crypto traders already spend their day.
Recently, Coinbase expanded its agent trading feature to include U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), offering thousands of listed names with 24/5 trading, fractional shares from $1, and zero commissions through Coinbase Capital Markets Corp. This move is expected to increase the use of AI-powered trading agents.
