Guernsey-Regulated Bitcoin Bonds Bring Tax Relief to Long-Term Holders
Bitcoin Life has launched regulated Bitcoin insurance bonds in the UK, offering long-term holders a way to park their cryptocurrency inside a trusted regulatory structure. The company, operating as Perpetual21 Limited, secured a full license in Guernsey on September 17 to function as an international long-term life insurance company.
The 'whole-of-life' bond allows clients to pay a single premium, either in Bitcoin or fiat currency, and the entire policy value is held in Bitcoin under institutional custody. This product sidesteps the probate processes that can leave crypto holdings in limbo when someone dies without clear instructions for their private keys.
Founder Peter Lane has described the bond as a 'forever home' for Bitcoin, positioning it as a long-term wealth preservation tool denominated in Bitcoin. The partners behind the product include BitGo Europe GmbH for custody, BWCI for trustee services, Polo Insurance Managers for oversight, and Carey Olsen for legal architecture.
This move attempts to solve the problem of estate planning tools being unsuitable for bearer assets secured by cryptographic keys. By housing Bitcoin inside a regulated insurance wrapper with built-in estate planning features, policyholders can potentially defer or reduce tax liabilities depending on their home jurisdiction.
