Halogen Capital Prepares Malaysia’s First Digital Currency ETF
Halogen Capital, Malaysia’s first licensed digital asset fund manager, is preparing to launch the country’s first digital currency exchange-traded fund (ETF). The firm, led by CEO Hann Liew, is developing a shariah-compliant Bitcoin ETF, which could provide millions of investors with a regulated way to trade digital currencies through Bursa Malaysia. This initiative is supported by recent regulatory updates, including the sixth revision of the Guidelines on Exchange-Traded Funds by the Securities Commission Malaysia.
The ETF aims to simplify digital asset exposure for institutional investors, who prefer a consolidated portfolio rather than managing separate cryptocurrency wallets. Liew highlights that global crypto ETFs have grown rapidly due to their convenience and security. If approved, Halogen’s Bitcoin ETF could debut by the end of 2026, offering features like in-kind creation and redemption, allowing investors to exchange ETF units for Bitcoin.
Halogen is also targeting RM1 billion in assets under management (AUM) by the end of 2026, having already reached RM500 million. The firm’s growth strategy includes expanding beyond cryptocurrency with products like the Halogen Partners Portfolio, which offers multi-asset model portfolios. Additionally, Halogen has raised RM13.3 million in venture funding, with investors including Digital Currency Group and Penjana Kapital.
Liew emphasizes Halogen’s focus on ETFs, citing their growing popularity in Asia and alignment with Malaysia’s Capital Market Masterplan. The firm plans to raise additional funds if its ETF plans succeed, further solidifying its position in the digital asset market.
