Hana Bank Crushes Settlement Time with $100M Blockchain Bond
Hana Bank made financial history when it issued a $100 million five-year foreign-currency digital bond through Euroclear's blockchain-based D-FMI. What's remarkable is that the entire transaction was settled on the same day, collapsing a process that normally takes three to five business days into T+0.
This achievement marks the first time a Korean financial institution has directly used Euroclear's infrastructure for a digital bond and the first same-day settlement in South Korea's foreign-currency bond market. The deal was led by Standard Chartered as sole lead manager and bookrunner, with Citi serving as DNN and fiscal agent.
Hana Bank's official stated that this transaction represents 'a significant step beyond simply diversifying our funding channels, as they bring blockchain technology into the capital market.'
The success of this bond issue is timely, given South Korea's target to implement a full tokenized-securities framework by February 2027. However, Hana Bank has already demonstrated that global distributed-ledger settlement through existing institutional plumbing is possible.
