Hashdex Bitcoin ETF Set for Shutdown Amid Shift to AI Investments
The Hashdex Bitcoin ETF (DEFI), launched in 2022 as the first Bitcoin futures ETF registered under the Securities Act of 1933, is set to shut down on August 4. The fund has liquidated with just $14.7 million in assets under management, a relatively small amount that makes its long-term survival unlikely. This decision comes amid dwindling flows into spot-market bitcoin offerings, which have been overshadowed by the high returns offered by AI-related investments.
Industry analysts observe that many investors are choosing to chase the better returns offered by AI stocks, viewing the opportunity cost of holding BTC as too high. Despite this, Bitcoin still holds significant long-term growth potential due to its ability to become digital gold.
The total market cap of gold is around $29 trillion, while Bitcoin's is roughly $1.3 trillion. To match gold's market cap, Bitcoin would need to rise more than 2000%. However, the comparison between gold and Bitcoin is compelling, as Bitcoin has a durable competitive advantage due to its name brand recognition and historical tenure.
Bitcoin's price may be volatile, but it has endured previous bear markets with significant declines. The long-term bull case for Bitcoin remains intact, even considering its ability to compete directly with gold.
